“My
pursuit in painting over the past several years
has been to give impressionism a more up-to-date
look.” Says painter Gregory Lang of his
newest series of urban landscapes. “I don’t
want the composition to dictate what you see,
I want the subtle aspects of the painting to be
as significant as the bolder ones.”
Born and raised in Connecticut,
Lang was heavily influenced by the post-impressionist
and maritime paintings of the region. At age
nine, a storybook written and illustrated by
Lang was featured at a group exhibition at the
Museum of Discovery in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
Lang studied drawing and painting at the Silvermine
School of Art in New Canaan, Connecticut and
at age sixteen began formal training in oil
painting.
After two years of studying
in Germany, Lang moved to California in 1993
at the age of twenty one. Falling in love with
San Francisco, Lang began creating abstract
urban scenes. “San Francisco has a European
feel to it and I wanted to capture that in my
work. In the foreground I place the dark and
warm colors and in the background thin washes
of grays and taupes we associate with
the rain or fog. It all makes for a wonderful
painting you can really get lost in.”
